Standing In Motorized Kayak With 2HP Outboard Outboard Gas Engine
That’s it. We’ve created a new type of watercraft: The most amazing thing about it is how easy and fun it is to drive this thing.
The long, articulated tiller extension is perfect for both steering and accelerating. It takes minutes to learn how to drive this motorized kayak, even in the standing position.
The implications for fishing trips and touring are significant. Continue reading
9.6 mph With a 3HP Outboard Gas Engine On A W500 Fishing Kayak, By Gary Thorberg, MN
Gary Thorberg, from Minnyaks, in Farmington, Minnesota, mounted a 3HP outboard gas engine on his W500 fishing kayak. His goal was to break the speed record for this kind of watercraft, and he did it, big time, clocking 9.6 mph. Interestingly, there was no difference between upwind and downwind, which raises the possibility that Gary simply reached the upper limit of this motor’s speed, which is limited by factors such as RPM, propeller size, pitch, etc. Continue reading
The Thorbergs In A Tandem Kayaking Trip In Lake Superior, Minnesota
Gary Thorberg and his wife went on a beautiful tandem kayaking trip in lake Superior.
Gary tells that launching their W500 was easy, and so were paddling and beaching in those little beaches.
This wasn’t a typical kayak fishing trip, but rather a long kayak trip in tandem, in which the W500 performed as a tandem touring kayak, or as an expedition kayak, due to its extended carrying capacity.
The W500 fit easily on Gary’s pickup truck bed. Continue reading

John and Jeanne Exploring Fox River By Kayak, And Catching Fish Too – Wisconsin
Jeanne asked if I wanted to get some exercise and explore some stretches of river that we haven’t paddled before. Yes was my answer and we put the W’s in the truck and headed off for more exploration. This was just intended to be a touring trip but I always seem to take one fishing rod along, I can’t help it.
It was a stretch of the Fox river that I figured would be scenic but not hold many game fish.
The water was very stained as I predicted and I spotted many carp moving about. We approached a bridge and I couldn’t resist putting the paddle down and fishing the current break with my jointed Rapala. As I retrieved my lure near the boat I was startled by a set of jaws almost jumping into my W and grabbing my lure! I could not see what grabbed it because of the splash and because I almost jumped up in the air seeing jaws appearing last second out of the stained water! Much to my surprise it was a frisky Catfish. It was a first for me, catfish on a floating minnow bait and first cat in the W. I still had hope for maybe a bass or pike in this dark water. Then we spotted some back water that seemed to be blocked by brush and tree branches. I figured it is time to take advantage of the W’s ability to climb over obstacles. Bingo, it paid off again, getting into tough spots with the W. I found an area holding Largemouth bass and had fun catching them on the surface. What a blast! Continue reading
