A nice day in Ozella, fishing with Bob

By Gary Rankel

Nature Coast Kayak Fishers

Bob Smaldone and I headed out in our W 500’s today. Bob cheated a bit with his trolling motor, but I managed to keep up with him most of the time. He was almost run over by a group of yakers out for a day of fun. We got some nice trout but nothing worth bringing the camera out for.

Nature Coast Kayak Fishers’ club outing in dense fog

By Gary Rankel

Nature Coast Kayak Fishers
My kayak angler group ran into a morning of dense fog at Ozello 2 days ago.
Art Myjak, who is still recovering from a stroke he had 2 years ago, was good to go in his Wavewalk 500. He is still a bit unsteady and don’t think he would do real well in a more traditional yak.
Fortunately, I asked the new guys in our club to bring a VHF radio with them so we could maintain contact. They were invaluable in the fog.

Nice Ozello snook

By Gary Rankel

Nature Coast Kayak Fishers Club

Had a nice morning out of Ozello – got a slot red and a really nice 34 inch snook.
It took me 40 minutes to get her in and another 10 giving her CPR before letting her swim off.
Looked like she was ready to spawn – hope she produces a few thousand youngsters for us to catch next year.

Jai’s first kayak fishing trip

By Gary Rankel

Nature Coast Kayak Fishers

Art and I accompanied Jai Rhee on his first ever kayak fishing trip today, in his brand new W700. Outside of the fact that we didn’t get any fish, we had a great day with Art showing steady progress in his recovery from last year’s stroke, and Jai appreciating the fishability of his new W700. He’s still learning the art of paddling and yak fishing, but he’s more than a willing learner. His only complaint was his sore arms after after 5 hours of paddling / casting. I’m glad he decided to buy a pickup truck to facilitate loading and hauling his 700 around.
We topped the day off with a cold one and a great grouper lunch at the nearby seafood place in Ozello.

Kayak fishing still possible

By Gary Rankel

Well, we got 3 Wavewalkers together today who managed to paddle through their ailments for a nice, albeit slow fishing day on the water.
Bob Smaldone’s juiced up W allowed him to leave Art Myjak and I in his wake while giving his bum shoulder a rest.

Art, still recovering from a stroke last year, paddled just fine, but needed a cane and a bit of help from me to get his W over a 50-yard section of beach to the water, So far, so good, for me – just a bit of dementia, but I still remember where all my hot spots are and what my wife looks like!
