Maiden Offshore Voyage and Wheels For W500 Fishing Kayak – Ken From Katikati, New Zealand

I went out in the kayak for the first time this morning. The wind appeared to have eased off, so I went out from Beach Road at 8am. High tide was early this morning, so it wasn’t the best time to go, but I didn’t want to wait any longer to try it.
I ended up paddling in the sitting position, and felt quite happy with that, even though the wind got up and I ended up having to paddle into a 500mm chop and strong head wind..

I shall have to do some fine tuning in how I use it, but the bottom line is that I am thrilled with it, and it will get a lot more use than my [name brand sit-in kayak]. Continue reading

New Kayak Flotation Down Under, By Dennis Hodgetts, New Zealand

Dennis Catching 100 lbs Eagle Ray – New Zealand W Kayak Night Fishing Report

I have mentioned before that our local harbour has a lot of sting rays. There are 2 varieties, Short tail and Eagle rays. Eagle rays are more numerous and can be spectacular to catch. They will leap from the water – they put up a massive fight. Short tails just tend to stick to the bottom and can be almost impossible to move.

I was fishing at night – about 8pm – and all of a sudden my reel started to scream, and there was no prize for guessing that I had hook an Eagle ray. It took about 300 metres [330 yards] of line – I wound in most of that in and off it went again – and this was repeated over and over.

Kayak fishers will cut the line quickly with these beasts because they pull so hard you either loose a reel full of line – or if you can apply enough drag to stop these things you can capsize a kayak easily. I wanted to get this fish to the W500 –initially because I didn’t want to lose all my line. and later because I just wanted to see how big it was.
It took me about 1-1/2 hours to get it to the kayak. I had my cell phone with me and tried to get some photos, but because it was so dark, and I was holding the line with one hand to hold the rays head at the surface of the water, it was very difficult. I only really got head shots of the thing. Continue reading

Dennis’ Account Of His First Time Paddling His W Kayak Standing Up

The very first time I went fishing in the W500, I missed the tide, and had the small anchor dragging because I had a very strong tidal flow and a strong wind both in the same direction.
As I headed back to shore I noticed a young guy on long SUP board. I hadn’t tried standing before that, but since the afternoon’s fishing was a right off I thought that I would give the stand up paddling a go.
After paddling my W500 sitting down up wind and standing up down wind a few times, I noticed that the young guy was paddling to shore and walking along the shore before re-launching each time, because he couldn’t paddle his board against both tide and wind.
I didn’t really take much notice of who was faster because I was busy experimenting. I found that if I leaned my weight on one side of the kayak, I could paddle on the other side and didn’t need to change over. It was fun, and if I can do it second time out then most people should be able to. Continue reading
