Peter Traykovski is an oceanographer who specializes in Applied Ocean Physics & Engineering. He works at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. WHOI is the world’s largest private, non-profit oceanographic research institution, and a global leader in the study and exploration of the ocean.
Peter is also an avid kayaker and surfer…
Peter needed a small, lightweight, stable, dry and comfortable boat, in which he could spend long hours in the ocean. After testing various options, he chose the W500, which he outfitted with a 2hp 4-cycle Honda outboard, as well as various scientific instruments. Says Peter: –

Working great so far… Have it mostly rigged for science, just a few finishing touches required.
Did a quick survey of Woods Hole Harbor last week with the Honda motor and the Hummingbird sidescan and was pleased with the results. Put some sump pumps in tonight for keeping water out in rougher conditions. Just need to finish integrating the RTK GPS and will be all set. I am shipping it to North Carolina for a project studying a tidal inlet next week so that will its first major test. Will send some more pics when I get a chance.

Using A Trailer For Kayak Transportation, By Gary Thorberg

I own a small, lightweight trailer that I use for transporting my motorized fishing kayak together with my electric bike.

Rox Test Drives Her 1.2hp Outboard Motorized Bass Fishing Kayak

Here is the test ride, it was awesome!!!!!
I had a late start today, didn’t hit the water until 2pm. Cloudy, windy and water temps were 53.
Today was my maiden voyage in the W500 with my 1.2hp Gamefisher outboard motor.

It Was AWESOME, I had so much fun, the W500 handled like always – Stable, stable and yes Soooooooooo Stable. The motor made no difference in the balance, it was like the kayak was meant to be used with a gas outboard.
I was doing doughnuts, driving over my wakes, I felt like a Kid with a new Toy…………
I even stopped to fish a little, maybe 1/2 hour was spent on fishing.
All smallies came out of the channel in 10′ to 16′ of water. Rattle Trap was really the only lure I tried, time was short. Only 2 Smallies were picture worthy, lost a beast, and landed 6 that were cookie cutters, 13″.

These 2 Big Girls hit the RT like a freight train. They both did circles under water putting a good bend in my Med/Hvy BPS rod before coming up and jumping like crazy even with the cold water temps.

LIFE IS GOOD!!!!!!!

Driving The W Motorized Kayak Seated With Tiller Extension

Here’s a short video showing what it’s like to drive the W500 kayak motorized with a 2HP outboard gas engine, and steer it with a long, articulated tiller extension:

The long tiller extension offers the driver to sit more forward, and make the boat more level, although at high peed the bow still goes up.
The articulation in the tiller extension makes it easy to steer, as it enables both pushing and pulling, as well as rotating the handle in order to increase and decrease power.

Motorized W500 Fishing Kayak In Tandem, Powered By 2HP Outboard Gas Engine

This is out second day testing of W500 kayak powered by a 2HP Honda gas outboard engine.
This time we tested it in tandem, with a second adult on board.
The W kayak seen in this video is loaded with about 390 lbs, which is over the maximum 360 lbs load we recommend.
The passenger in the front is effectively protected from spray by a cockpit cover made of half a small tarp that cost $5. Not a single drop of water got into the cockpit during this entire voyage, and the cockpit cover wasn’t really necessary.

We kept a W paddle on board to help us pole while launching and beaching in shallow water, and as a contingency plan.
The kayak was very stable, even when we turned at full throttle.
