Micronautical Design is a concept that I thought of years ago.
It’s about making very small watercraft such as kayaks, canoes, dinghies, etc. more friendly to the people who operate them (-sounds like a god idea, eh?… ), and through this increase the overall performance of these small, personal boats (-it works! …)
Technically speaking, it means developing the new possibilities offered by our invention named “Twin Hull Personal Water Craft” , which was granted U.S. utility patent number 6871608

When it comes to designing or outfitting fishing kayaks, Micronautics can improve the boat’s ergonomics, bio mechanics, lateral stability, tracking, speed, mobility and ‘fishability’ (-we all know what Fishability means, don’t we?…)

A Micronautical approach can improve motorized kayaks, whether they’re outfitted with electric trolling motors, or outboard gas engines.

I created the Micronautical Design website years ago, and didn’t pay much attention to it until recently, when it occurred to me that following the amazing developments in W kayak sailing, fishing, rowing, and motorizing, the Micronautical site itself could benefit from being redesigned, outfitted with some new features, and loaded with new content focused on fishing kayak design and outfitting. Needless to say, that the Micronautical site features the work of many wonderful people from around the world, whose creativity helped propelling the W boat concept to the forefront of small boat design. The site is still in a reorganization phase, and we’ll add more stuff to it in weeks to come.

This blog, Wavewalk Fishing Kayaks, will keep being the place where things happen on a continuous basis – It’s Wavewalk’s main broadcasting channel, and the place where sensible kayak anglers and paddlers meet!

I have been kayaking on the East Branch of the Ware River. The water is at its highest ever since Tropical Storms Irene and Lee and most of the beaver dams are below the water level.
I took a nice bass (picture included) in a quite part of a turn in the river recently.
The higher water level allows me to go further upstream, but the vegetation and current can pose challenges as one picture attests to. Of course coming back downstream is a blast because the challenge (and fun) is not to portage down an obstacle but to kayak over it! Continue reading →

Don’t know if I will have a chance to go out again this year, but the W will stay in the garage until I put the snowplow on the tractor for the winter.

So, you’re paddling your kayak, or fishing from it in warm, fresh water, and you may think to yourself that nothing could happen to you if for some reason you’d have to ‘take a swim’ because you lost balance and fell overboard… Well, you’re wrong.

We’ve already wrote an article about a variety of dangers that kayak paddlers and anglers are exposed to in different water conditions, and here is some more about this important kayak safety issue:

Officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have confirmed that a deadly amoeba, which is commonly found in lakes and rivers is the cause of the recent death of a Florida swimmer -
Health officials in Brevard County, FL, said they believe water infected with the parasite Naegleria fowleri went up the swimmer’s nose while she was swimming in the St. Johns River, east of Orlando.
Once the amoeba enters the brain, it usually causes a fatal infection called primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM). Initial signs of PAM include headache, fever, nausea, vomiting, loss of smell or taste and stiff neck.
The disease spreads rapidly, and usually results in death within a few days.
This disease is not contagious.
A similar case has also been reported in Virginia.
Florida state officials issued a health advisory saying the amoeba proliferates in stagnant freshwater lakes, ponds, streams and rivers, when temperatures climb into the 80s. They said people should take safety precautions when swimming, and avoid swallowing pool, lake or river water.
Officials say 32 such infections were reported in the US between 2001 and 2010.

Does anyone need more reasons to look at traditional kayaking’s cherished Eskimo Roll technique as inadequate and hazardous?
Does anyone need more reasons to look at fishing standing on top of a SOT kayak as taking unnecessary risks?
Does anyone need more reasons to understand why SUP boards are not well suited for stand up paddling on flat water?
