Says Gary:
Dick Sherman and I finally caught a few trout and redfish out of Ozello yesterday after a few recent trips when the fish grabbers didn’t even get wet. We stopped for a minute to enjoy a couple of egrets who also seemed to be doing OK.
Remember those three dolphins that pillaged Jeff’s private fishing spot a few weeks ago?
Well, this time Jeff got the upper hand, at least over one of them, as he was fishing from his W500 kayak and the aquatic robber was trying to catch the same redfish…
Jeff is taking the next step towards simplifying his kayak fishing style. No more complicated rigging with a milk crate, and not that many rod holders: His W500 offers enough storage space for all his fishing gear and tackle, including his Emmrod fishing rods, so he uses just one deck mounted rod holder (RAM-117).
Here are a few pictures from yesterday. I had not idea it was so nasty on the water till I came in and one of the fellows from the bridge barge said they were concerned about me crossing the intercoastal. All of these fish are considered trash fish since they have little food value. However as sport fish they are just a blast to catch, loads of fun and lots of pulling.
Jeff
I took my wife’s cousin, Paulene, who is visiting from England, to the Crystal River yesterday to see some manatees. It was not only her first time in a W, it was her first time in a kayak, and she did well during a 2 mile paddle (maybe a blister or two on her hands).
The trip also gave me a chance to paddle in tandem with my wife for the first time, and I was surprised at how fast we were able to go despite the extra weight and me being the only paddler (I think I’m going to have to order another paddle from you, for times like these).
The two W’s also fit nicely into my new truck.
We only saw one manatee. Guess the warmer water has moved them out into the Gulf (hopefully not anywhere near the oncoming oil spill which is really scary).
Jeff McGovern, reporting from somewhere in NE Florida…:
The catching was steady all morning but it was all jacks and bluefish so my lures took a pounding.
I had one very good spot that normally produces good trout catches get blown out by three dolphins who crashed my party. One pass from those three in close quarters and the fish won’t be around till the next tide change.
Once I got back to the fish camp I was surrounded by happy kayakers with questions about the W500. It’s finally warm and people are getting back on the water.
The Nature Coast Kayak Fishing Club in Florida is fairly new, and today they held their first kayak fishing tournament.
Wavewalk was represented by Gary (green W500 fishing kayak) and Dick (yellow W500 fishing kayak).
Says Gary:
Our new kayak fishing club had its first outing today at Ozello, Florida. Fishing was slow with only a few small redfish and spotted sea trout boated, but what an awesome day on the water.
Hey, all you northerners – this is why people come to Florida!
Two Wave walkers showed up, and our W kayaks drew lots of looks from the wet seat club…
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and two is better than one.
So here’s a couple of kayak fishing pictures sent by Jeff, the kayak fishing guru from Florida:
Words are unnecessary, but in this case it’s amusing to read what Jeff writes:
“Notice the happy smiling face I have, I’m not wet or in any way uncomfortable, but I think the other two guys I went fishing with were, and we did have one confirmed case of “wet butt syndrome”.
Both their fishing kayaks had obvious paddling effort issues into the wind the W had no concerns with.
One of them could stand in his boat but it was one of those things done for a quick look not for standup angling. The W500 in comparison to the two other boats fished much larger. Meaning that for it’s size so much more of the boat was available for the angler more of the time. Wasted out of reach areas really don’t exist and the work space for gear and rigging is unsurpassed.
When you arrive in from a day of fishing the W you are ready to go right on back on the water for more. With other kayaks you really need some down time to prepare your body for more abuse.”
