Epic, That’s what this day was……Epic.
I took the W500 out for my first solo Striper fishing on the Connecticut River In Windsor Locks, CT.
My buddy Mike was already on the water, I launched at 12:00 noon.
I took the 1.2hp Gamefisher outboard since I knew I could count on it running well.
My first slam came at 12:25, but the fish came unbuttoned.
I was drifting and casting my top water lure and working it slowly back to the W500, when BAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fish on, and it’s a big one………………..ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Off goes the drag, and the sleigh ride began.
It was an awesome Battle, she circled me twice, and shot up river, still towing me ………….. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.
I start to tire her, and get her yak side, went to grip the lip with my boga, and ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ she wasn’t ready.
Now she is tired, I get her yak side one more time, reach with the bogas ………… and SHE IS MINE!!!!!
You could here me hooting for miles I’m sure.

29” Fat and Healthy, 14 1/2 lbs of fighting fury.
Many more Battles happened after that.

Today was one of the Best Fishing Days of my LIFE!!
I landed 3 keepers, and 9 smaller Stripers.

I had some awesome blow ups, and Lost 4 Bigger Stripers, but That’s okay, that’s why its called fishing.
I can’t Thank You enough Yoav, for this wonderful yak, The W500 Rules the water.
I took Skye out today for a little fishing trip at a Pond not far from my house.

I promised her I would, since I left her home to chase some Stripers on the Ct River with my Buddy Mike yesterday.
Fishing was very tough, water is high and Muddy On the Ct River.
I did manage to land a nice fat Striper, I cast my 3/8 oz. jig rigged with a Berkeley Hollow belly in blue herring up next to a lay down close to shore and BAM…………………. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ Pole bending and my tip is bouncing as this bad girl made her run down river, then I was reeling like a mad woman as she turned and swam back up river..
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ ………….I finally gain some ground and get her boat side.
Mike got the lip grippers, and she’s in the boat.
My first Keeper of the season, 29 1/2” and 14#, fat and healthy.

She swam away strong to fight another day.

Next Week, I’m taking the W500 out for my first Striper trip, My buddy Mike will be out in his Bass boat
keeping and eye on me, I can’t wait.

The pond gave up no big fish today, but that doesn’t matter, it was nice just being out on the water in my W500, fishing with my dog.

Tight Lines and MoPaddle Safe All.
I know I haven’t been in touch, but last month we lost our German Shepherd Ty, of 6 years old, after a twist in her stomach.

I’ve been lost without her, she was my fishing buddy, friend and protector.
So I hadn’t been fishing at all.

Well, 3 weeks we got another puppy, Skye, and though I miss my dog, the pup has helped ease the pain.

So my trips may be fewer this year, but this pup will live the dream.

And the new set of eyes to watch over me and my bags as I fish.

While looking in an old PC, I found these photos that Rox sent me back in 2006
They show Rox’ catch, and her green W300 kayak (early version).
They are among the first pictures that kayak anglers started sending me back then, and I was very happy to get them!
A couple years later, in 2008, I started this blog, and since then, Rox’ contribution to it has been huge.
The reason I decided to publish this stuff is because Rox is suffering from an injury in her shoulder that prevents her from fishing, and I thought these pictures would cheer her up a little

Regardless of their subject, getting pictures from W kayakers is always fun, but some cases are jaw-dropping… Russ Hicks, from Connecticut, got himself a W502 in the fall of last year, and put a 2hp 4-cycle Honda outboard on it (read his initial review >> ). Then came winter, and Russ turned his W502 into this amazing high tech fishing system:

We cannot fish in Connecticut until 3rd week in April.
Have done more work on WW: Some CT lakes & ponds are elec motors only, so I have set the boat up to work with gas or elec. Had to make piece to raise the height of the motor mount for the elec. Made it out of teak & s/s.
Installed Fish Finder, Compass, Radio. Racks to hold paddle & push pole.
Put another bolt in each side of motor mount, it’s more stable & rigid.
I also installed a very small seat from a rowing machine. It’s in the best place for me.
Also took an old plastic cutting board and made a platform for my jiggers. It’s overkill, but it’s what I want to fish.
I plot out the lakes before I fish them, marking the outline of the proper depth for my type of fishing with buoys on my GPS screen. Got a couple more local & one in MA to do in the next few weeks.
