Jeanne asked if I wanted to get some exercise and explore some stretches of river that we haven't paddled before. Yes was my answer and we put the W's in the truck and headed off for more exploration. This was just intended to be a touring trip but I always seem to take one fishing rod along, I can't help it.
It was a stretch of the Fox river that I figured would be scenic but not hold many game fish.
The water was very stained as I predicted and I spotted many carp moving about. We approached a bridge and I couldn't resist putting the paddle down and fishing the current break with my jointed Rapala. As I retrieved my lure near the boat I was startled by a set of jaws almost jumping into my W and grabbing my lure! I could not see what grabbed it because of the splash and because I almost jumped up in the air seeing jaws appearing last second out of the stained water! Much to my surprise it was a frisky Catfish. It was a first for me, catfish on a floating minnow bait and first cat in the W. I still had hope for maybe a bass or pike in this dark water. Then we spotted some back water that seemed to be blocked by brush and tree branches. I figured it is time to take advantage of the W's ability to climb over obstacles. Bingo, it paid off again, getting into tough spots with the W. I found an area holding Largemouth bass and had fun catching them on the surface. What a blast! Continue reading →

Sometimes we need to congratulate and even salute W kayak anglers for special achievements, even if those are the result of fishing trips where no kayaks were used…
This is the case with Ben Ciliberto’s amazing catch:

“Had the pleasure of spending two hot days on the Susquehanna river near Wiiliamsport PA with Mike O’Brien chasing carp with a fly rod. July 15th was an amazing , resulting in a lot of action and two beautiful carp– 16 and 18 lbs — taken and released on an O’Brien crayfish pattern.

The difficulty finding a feeding carp, presenting the fly, hooking and playing the strongest of fresh water fish, makes it that much more rewarding — thanks Mike for a most memorable outing!

-”I had few great days of fishing in between storms, here in Connecticut.
1:30pm I started my trip on the Farmington River coves in Simsbury.
Water levels are way up, I only had to walk down half of the path to the water, launched the W500 right on the hill, just slid down in and off I went.
I started off with a small white chuckit frog, landed 3 bass right off the bat.”

“Headed down towards the Main arm of the Farmington River, stopped at some trees, picked off a couple more with the small chuckit frog.”

“Then I heard an osprey, and it sounded like it was fighting, I look up, and out of the trees comes a Bald Eagle attacking the Osprey.”

“This Eagle meant business, and was looking to kill this Osprey.
I got a video of it:”

-”I figured after watching this, I didn’t care if another bass came to hand, but the bite turned on.
I started pitching into the holes in the weeds, yum dinger t-rigged weightless, letting my bait sink and shaking it, while waiting for that tap.
I pulled 3 Bass up and out this way, nice chunky bass.”

-”While paddling I came upon some Monster Grass carp.
Here is a video of the encounter:”

-”I had to leave for an appointment, so I was off the water at 5pm.

Life is Good!

Tight Lines all

Ben doesn’t like to sit at all in his kayak – He prefers to stand up as much as possible, and that’s why he designed and built this amazing stand-up fishing rig.
Says Ben: -”The rig is great for stability, getting in and out, a rail to grab if you get tipsy, and holds everything – I’ve completed it on all three W kayaks now—third one in half the time.”
