Jeanne and I took some friends out for a little grilling and a sunset paddle on part of the Oconomowoc River. I was able to pack the grill right behind me and we had plenty of room for all the coolers holding all the food and beverages for our outing.
It always amazes us how much we can comfortably carry aboard our Wavewalks. It really opens up all sorts of options for W kayak trips.
Eric, from Walk on Waves, our distributor of fishing kayaks in Norway and Sweden, sold a W500 about a week ago.
Why would I mention this small news? Because Norway’s latitude is pretty much the same as Alaska’s, and there’s no navigable water to be found there this time of year, unless you want to venture in a part of the Atlantic Ocean known as the North Sea, which isn’t recommended…
Being situated that far North also means that spring starts later in Norway, even in comparison to cold regions such as the Northeast and Northwest, here in the US.
This is to say that Norwegian kayakers and anglers need to be more patient…

So why would a Norwegian paddler or angler buy a W kayak now, in January or early February?
Assuming W kayakers are sensible, and they don’t take a kayak in the ocean and fish in in extremely cold temperatures, the answer would be that it has to do with either some complex rigging projects, and/or simply Hope – That person wants to sit at home, look at their W fishing kayak, and imagine all the great, fun things they’d do with it as soon as the snow stops falling, and the ice on the rivers and lakes melts; The fishing trips, the rigging, maybe camping, or hunting?

Hope, Patience, and Imagination – and the Love of Boating, Paddling, and Fishing.
These are things that are easy to understand and relate to!

I’m finally getting around to sending you some pics of our latest expeditions. We’ve spent a couple weekends camping and fishing in the months of September and October. In Sept, we went to Lake Del Valle, just south of Livermore, CA. Great time, but no fish caught out of the kayak that weekend. In Oct, we took the kayak to Lake San Antonio. This lake is located northwest of Paso Robles. The next two pics show my two sons taking the kayak out fishing at sunrise into one of the coves at Lake San Antonio. The steam rising off the lake is due to the air temp being colder than the water temp that morning. Made for an interesting photo. The last photo is a pic of my temporary milk crate rigging. I say temporary as I haven’t built up the courage to drill holes in the boat for the Scotty rod holders I intend to use. The milk crate is wide enough to span the two hulls and I strap it down with bungees. While I don’t intend to keep this milk crate setup, I include it here for your other customers who may also want a beginner fishing setup while they are deciding what works best for them long term. I know it has helped me learn what I like and what I don’t.
I am loving this vessel and my sons are as well!

Cheers,

Then it was time to go fishing with my son, Ivar.
After all the positive things that I told him about Wavewalk fishing kayaks, he was very curious. Then there was a 4 day trip on Foxen / Le Stora in Sweden.
We had a nice camp on a small island, where we went out with our kayaks.
There were a lot of fish, we shared the pike, and then I got a bream on the hook, which is pretty rare.
We saw the beaver and osprey, and many other bird species. We spent many hours in the kayak, up to eight hours a day. I had never been able to fish that long from any canoe or kayak.
It wasn't enough for Ivar just to sit in Wavewalk, and he tried a number of positions while he fished. Being able to stand and fish from his Wavewalk kayak seemed like a great advantage to Ivar. Continue reading →

Spending time outdoors has always been popular in Scandinavia. Here is a trip report that we translated from Norwegian. It first appeared on Walk on Waves – Wavewalk fishing kayaks’ in Norway and Sweden:

Transporting a Wavewalk kayak is a simple matter. You do not need any special roof racks, since it is very stable (just like on the water) on a normal roof. If you want to carry two W kayaks it is just as easy, you tie them vertically to each other. Two straps around it all, and it sits well on the roof rack.

Memorial Day Excursion

The voyage began at Seadrift, Texas, the best kept fishing secret in Texas. Seadrift is the home of the Saltwater Cowgirl and Reel Time Lodge to name a few of our favorite establishments. I was actually a little overwhelmed as the mother ship, piloted by Captain Russel Cady along with Captain Jeff and Captain Joey, met us at Goose Island. These three Captains at heart are commercial shrimpers that total over a 120 years of experience between the three. Fishing and shrimping is a hard life, though a good life, definitely the heartbeat of this small community of Seadrift, Texas. This community knows the bays, good and bad, and I dedicate this blog to the Cady family members and others that have not returned home from these bays.

The two W500 s set on top of the mother ship and was an awesome site to see while beginning our voyage to Mesquite Bay. Fifteen set sail for an unchartered voyage.

The yaks are ready for the trip...

Our camp, Camp Oklahoma, in honor of our friends that joined us from the Sooner State, was established on a uninhabited island. Tents were set and facilities were built to afford us a resemblance of an established community with amenities. Fifteen of us camped for three days and nights.

My wife, Valerie, enjoyed a day on the bay fishing for red fish and at one time I looked up and she had laid down on the W500, feet propped in the air and was taking a nap!!! When she awoke, she heard red fish jumping all around, cast her rod with a gold spoon and snagged a sweet little red, she was able to net him and put him on a stringer, all the while feeling very steady in the W500.

Nice red!

Captain Joey’s son, Trey, the youngest of our group demonstrated the speed and maneuverability of the W500 when he skimmed along the grassy lands in search of red fish. Captain Jeff is 6’3″ and over 200 lbs demonstrated the stability and agility possible while fishing for reds. His wife Cheryl was with him navigating the waterways while he was casting.

We started paddling at sun up and continued until sun down, with little land time for the W500, they were a most enjoyable add to our trip.

The wind blew hard at times, but the two W500 handled well, we caught reds, trout, flounder and a few mosquitoes. A trip and an experience of a lifetime!
