We launched the Wavewalk® Series 4 dubbed S4 in May of 2017. So far, it has been acclaimed by its users as a very comfortable and easy to paddle kayak, and a high performance motorboat in terms of fishability, versatility, comfort, load capacity, stability, and seaworthiness.
We publish a Wavewalk review only if it features its author’s full name and state, and pictures (or videos).
We publish reviews contributed by Wavewalk dealers as long as they use our kayaks and boats themselves for paddling, fishing, touring, hunting etc. We listen attentively to what they have to tell us because we think such people know what they’re talking about. We also recommend that our clients consult with them.

Wavewalk S4

Wavewalk® S4

The S4 is the world’s fastest kayak when motorized, as well as the world’s most stable kayak. The latter is the keys factor in enabling driving the S4 at high speed both on flat water and in rough water.

This is Wavewalk’s 4th boat series since 2004, following the 300 (Mark I and II), 500, and 700 series.
Like all other Wavewalk® products, this boat is 100% Made in USA.

The S4 delivers the highest performance in the field of small boats and skiffs, even before you’ve reached the water, starting from the fact that at 98 lbs it doesn’t require a trailer for transportation, and it’s easily portable even on rough terrain.
Its patented twin-hull design delivers more stability than any small boat out there, including much wider and heavier ones.  This allows for driving in fast currents and in choppy water.
In addition, being a true catamaran makes this boat track better than other boats.
The S4’s extra large cockpit (8′ long x 38″ wide) offers ample room for two anglers or hunters and their gear, or for up to three adult passengers – a total of up to 680 lbs.
The S4 features a long saddle seat similar to the saddle of other high performance vehicles, which offers maximal balancing capability as well as full comfort for going in choppy water and for long trips.
The S4 features a stand up casting platform at its bow, such as can be found in a typical skiff.
The cockpit’s slanted sides allow passengers to paddle with more ease and better control than what canoes and tandem fishing kayaks may offer them.
The S4 has an extremely shallow draft, and this fact in combination with its portability, load capacity and high performance as a paddle craft makes it the most practical solution for shallow water fishing.

Best Stability in Small Boats

        • Initial (Primary) Stability: The S4 is more stable than any kayak, canoe, Jon boat and small skiff, including Wavewalk’s W700.  A 200 lbs person standing with both feet in one of the S4 hulls will make it draft barely 1″ lower than it would if that person stood with one foot in each hull – hardly a noticeable difference.
        • Secondary Stability and Balancing Capability: The unique combination of a saddle seat (such as ATVs, PWC and snowmobiles feature) with high-volume twin hulls enables the passengers to balance themselves easily, intuitively, and more effectively than in any other boat, including kayaks, canoes, Jon boats, dinghies, skiffs, and personal watercraft (PWC / ‘jet-ski’).

The S4 is unrivaled in Stability terms.

Read more: Jon Boat Stability vs. Wavewalk® S4 »

Best Boat Ergonomics

The 15″ high saddle featuring in the S4 is similar to the saddle featuring in other high performance land and water vehicles, such as All-Terrain Vehicles (ATV), Personal Watercraft (PWC / ‘jet-ski’), and Snowmobiles, as well as certain Rigid-Inflatable Boats (RIB) designed for high speed motorizing offshore.
Passengers riding this saddle can travel for long hours, including in choppy water, without suffering from back pain or fatigue. This is due to the fact that while seated in the Riding position, with a leg on each side of the saddle, the passenger’s legs support them in the most effective way, and no horizontal pressure from a backrest is being applied on their lower back.
In addition, the S4 passengers can stand up any time they want, and keep driving and paddling while standing up. They can even lay down with their back on the saddle, and relax. Switching between positions assures that no extreme fatigue or tension would build up in any part of the passenger’s body.

Easy Transportation and Full Portability

The S4 weighs 98 lbs without a motor attached to it. This means that it does not require a trailer for transportation, since it can be car-topped. The S4 can be dragged or carried over rough terrain, and launched practically anywhere, whether it’s a rocky beach, shallow water, and other difficult spots that are not accessible to other boats.

Mobility and Range of Travel

The S4 can go anywhere, thanks to a number of special features –
No other boat offers such a combination of shallow draft and total multi-modal propulsion, namely the ability to keep going in an effective paddling and poling mode even if the water is too shallow and/or infested with weeds to allow for motorizing.
No other small boat works so well both on flat water and in the chop.

On Board Storage

The space available for dry storage on board the S4 is equivalent to the storage offered by a good size Jon-boat, or a regular skiff.

So far, the speed record for the S4 is 17 mph. This record was set with a 9.8 HP Tohatsu outboard motor by Captain Larry Jarboe, and documented in video. Based on the boat’s perfect performance at this speed, it could go faster with a more powerful motor. Please note that Wavewalk does not recommend using motors that are over 6 HP with the S4.

7. S4 vs. W700

        • W700 advantages over the S4:  Solo kayaking, tandem kayaking, solo canoeing, portability.
        • S4 advantages over the W700: Motorizing, tandem motorizing, tandem fishing, stability, offshore trips, load capacity.
        • Shallow water – The S4 drafts less than the W700, and it features a skiff stand up casting platform, but the W700 paddles better, generally.
        • Offshore – Being more of a boat than the W700, the S4 offers a clear advantage in the chop.

Currently, there are 19 full featured Wavewalk® 700 reviews listed on this page.
Per our company policy, each Wavewalk® 700 review includes the full name and state of the person who contributed it, as well as pictures. We consider anonymous kayak reviews and reviews posted under an alias to be worthless, and we disapprove of reviews authored by people who get paid to write them, such as journalists and website owners who depend on paid advertising.
We think a review is meaningful only if its author paid for the kayak they review, and they fully identify themselves as a regular client, or a reseller.
We accept reviews contributed by any Wavewalk reseller who bought a Wavewalk® 700 from us for their own, personal use, and does not resell other kayaks. Whether such person uses their W700 for paddling, fishing, hunting or motorized boating, as its user, they certainly have an interesting insight to share with us and with other users, and we are grateful to them for it, and for being a Wavewalk fan.

Wavewalk® S4 Reviews »

Wavewalk® 500 Reviews »

Wavewalk offers two microskiffs – The W700 and the Series 4 (S4)

The W700 and S4 offer the following advantages over other microskiff:

  1. Transportation – Both W700 and S4 are easy for one person to car top and neither requires a trailer for transportation.
  2. Comfort and Balancing – Both skiffs feature a personal watercraft (jet-ski) saddle seat that offers optimal ergonomics and the ability to change positions while enjoying the best balancing capability. Both can be outfitted with swivel seats.
  3. Paddling – The W700 performs better as a fishing paddle craft than any tandem kayak or canoe, both solo or tandem, and the S4 is a remarkable paddle craft for up to three paddlers, and it works perfectly even for one paddler. This means that their users can access shallow water and no-motor zones without any problems.
  4. Stability – The W700 is more stable than any large size fishing kayak and the S4 is more stable than skiffs that are considerably bigger.
  5. Seaworthiness – Both W700 and S4 perform very well in choppy water and waves, and protect their passengers from other boats’ wakes
  6. Load capacity – The W700 can accommodate two big anglers and their fishing gear, and the S4 can accommodate three. All people who fish out of these skiffs can fish standing.
  7. Light Weight and Portability – The W700 weighs 80 lbs without motor and accessories, and the S4 weighs 98 lbs without motor and accessories. This makes both of them easy to carry over long distance and rough terrain, and launch practically anywhere their owners want to do so.
  8. Shallow Draft – Both W700 and S4 draft far less than other skiffs, who are heavier.
  9. Modularity  – A W700 and S4 skiff can be easily attached to other W700 and S4 skiffs, and thus form motorized multi-boat platforms that are extremely stable and seaworthy. An S4x3 multi boat can take up to nine full size fishermen and their fishing gear on board. Disconnecting the skiffs from each other is easy, and once they’re no longer attached, they because autonomous again, for paddling as well as motorizing.

The S4 is a most seaworthy microskiff:

Microskiff definition

What is a microskiff? We found several definitions, but typically, a microskiff is a small, lightweight, flat bottomed motorboat used for flats fishing as well as in protected bays, estuaries, lakes and slow moving rivers. The typical microskiff crew consists of two anglers, and sometimes one angler. The microskiff is said to have evolved from dinghies.
Small and lightweight in the case of typical microskiff means a boat that requires transportation by trailer, and therefore must be launched and beached at a boat ramp.

The Microskiff propulsion problem

Microskiff are made to be propelled primarily by outboard motors, and they are too wide and heavy to allow for paddling. This is problematic for a number of reasons –
To begin with, an outboard motor can run out of gas or stall due to a technical problem, and an electric trolling motor that a microskiff may have on board isn’t enough for effective traveling over longer distances.
More importantly, both outboard gas motors and electric trolling motors use propellers that must be completely immersed in water a couple of inches below the surface. The result is that the effective draft of a microskiff is not particularly shallow, and often too high for very shallow water, a.k.a “skinny water”.
This problem also limits the typical microskiff in terms of potential launching and beaching locations, and this means that you must perform these operations at a boat ramp, which is a major source of frustration over a lot of wasted fishing time.
To add insult to injury, propellers don’t do well in the presence of aquatic vegetation, be it seaweed, grass, etc. This is particularly frustrating for anglers who know that such waters are among the best fisheries.

Human powered propulsion – Poling, anyone?

Microskiff manufacturers often show pictures of people who use a long push-pole to propel their microskiff through shallow water. This human powered mode of propulsion is indeed possible, but it’s not very practical –
To begin with, poling involves long intervals between each pole push, so the big effort invested in each push that accelerates the boat goes to waste when the boat decelerates while you are busy lifting the pole and sticking it back into the water. Acceleration is particularly demanding in energy terms, and in other words, the fact that microskiff are wide and heavy makes them lose speed quickly, and thereby drain your energy in a short time.
Few people can push a typical microskiff over a distance of more than several hundred yards, and this is not enough in terms of real-world fishing.
On top of this, the hull of a typical microskiff is not designed for effective tracking – It’s neither very long nor narrow, and it lacks elements such as fins, skegs or tunnels that may improve its directional stability. The result is that poling such a boat in a straight line becomes harder, which means you waste an additional and considerable amount of energy and time because your microskiff zigzags instead of going forward in a straight line.
Poling is far from being on par with more effective means of human powered propulsion such paddling and even rowing.

Conclusion –

A better microskiff must allow its crew to go in shallow water and vegetation-rich water in a human-powered propulsion mode other than poling and preferably not rowing, since effective rowing requires good technique that can be acquired only through much practice. This leaves paddling as the human-powered propulsion of choice, and therefore, a truly versatile and functional microskiff is required to offer its crew to use it easily and comfortably as a paddle craft.

The microskiff redefined for optimal performance in real-world fishing

Ideally, a microskiff should allow for either a crew of two fishermen or a solo fisherman to launch, beach, motorize, fish and paddle in any type of water, whether standing up or seated. This means that such a fishing boat should be highly stable yet narrow enough for effective paddling. Only the patented, catamaran-style Wavewalk™ from the new 700 series offers to work as a both a full tandem and solo skiff in the sense that it works perfectly well for one person too, when the second crew member is not present. The fact that the W700 features two long and narrow catamaran-style hulls helps it track better than other craft of similar size, and that helps poling as well as paddling it, with either dual-blade (kayak) paddles or single-blade paddles – canoeing style. The hulls and cockpit opening of the W700 are long enough to allow for dropping extra-long paddles in them.

The optimal microskiff must be lightweight enough to allow for trailer-free transportation, and car-topping by one person, in case no fishing buddy is present. Here too, the only two-person microskiff that offers such advantage is the new Wavewalk™ 700, which weighs just 80 lbs without a motor and accessories. In fact, this weight is lower than the weight of most high-end fishing kayaks out there, including sit-on-top (SOT) and sit-in models, especially tandem fishing kayaks, which are heavier than regular ones in in some cases heavier than jon boats…

A trailer-free microskiff with triple propulsion capability

The redefined microskiff is trailer-free I.E. easy to car top even for one person, suitable for choppy water, skinny water and vegetation-rich water, and it accommodates two full size fishermen who can fish standing in comfort. It can be easily and comfortably driven with a powerful outboard 3.5 HP motor, as well as with electric motors.
One or two people can easily paddle this microskiff either in a kayak-style (with dual-blade paddles) or in the traditional canoeing style, and it lends itself to poling more easily and effectively than any other microskiff does, including solo skiffs, I.E. microskiff for just one person.
Such is the new Wavewalk™ 700, and it comes in various colors including all white, which is the traditional color for this class of small fishing boats.

Unique, unrivaled stability that redefines kayaks

The popular W700 boat is stabler than the classic 500 kayak series, which is the world’s stablest kayak. This stability, eclipsed only by the S4, is especially noticeable at heavier loads and higher speed (motorized). Practically speaking, the stability of the W700 is comparable to that of a regular fishing boat –

This video shows what sets the W700 apart from kayaks, and makes it a boat as far as stability is concerned:

Motorizing and Driving

Driving is easier and more fun with Wavewalk’s joystick steering :

With a load capacity of 550 lbs, the W700 can serve as a boat tender, and for touring:

The W700 passengers ride its 7’8″ long ergonomic saddle, which is similar to the saddles of jet-skis, all-terrain vehicles (ATV) and snowmobiles, and they can stand up anytime. The cockpit has enough room for three average size adult passengers, or two large size ones.

W700 Carrying Capacity (Payload) and Draft

The average US adult male weighs 200 lbs, and the average US adult female weighs 165 lbs. This means that with a maximal recommended payload of 550 lbs, a W700 boat can carry two big guys and their fishing gear, plus a motor. Alternatively, it can carry 3 average-size adult paddlers (male and female) together with their fishing and camping gear.

  • Max Recommended Load: 550 lbs (250 kg)
  • Draft: 7.75″ at 550 lbs load (20 cm at 250 kg load)
  • Draft: 2.5″ at 200 lbs load

The W700 is the only shallow-draft fishing boat (skiff) that offers its crew to paddle easily, effectively and comfortably in water that’s too shallow for an outboard motor’s propeller to work. Poling over long distances is not an option for most people, which is why the W700’s full paddling alternative to motorizing makes it the most practical boat for fishing in shallow water, as well as in places where aquatic vegetation and underwater structures limit the use of a motor. The full-fledged paddling option also makes it possible to launch and beach the W700 practically anywhere.

W700 Internal Storage

Total internal volume for storage and passengers: 20.5 cubic ft (153 gallons, 580 liters). This volume does not include the space inside of the watertight Saddle, which should not be used for storage, since it is designated to serve as flotation.

W700 Flotation

The W700 saddle is a large-volume watertight compartment that provides 180 lbs (81 kg) of positive buoyancy, which works as flotation in case of capsize. Therefore, models from this new series are offered without foam flotation modules.
Outfitting a W700 with a pair of inflatable detachable flotation modules can increase the amount of flotation by 146 lbs of positive buoyancy (Total 326 lbs of positive buoyancy)

W700 Speed

Paddling mode: Compared to the 500 series, the W700 is considerably faster when powered by a tandem crew or a strong paddler, and noticeably faster for an average solo paddler.

Motorized: The W700 is much faster than the W500, for which the speed record is 13 mph. This is due mainly to the fact that the W700’s increased stability makes it easier to drive at high speed.

W700 Construction – How It’s Built

This product is assembled from two parts molded separately –

  1. The Saddle, which is closed from all directions and watertight. These attributes makes it effective as flotation for the boat.
  2. The Twinhull, which includes the two hulls, the Spray Deflector that goes around the cockpit, and a base for the Saddle part that’s dubbed the Central Platform.

The Twinhull is protected by seven molded-in plastic brackets integrated with the Saddle, plus one MDO (wood and polymer resin composite) heavy duty bracket installed behind the saddle, in a special compartment. This 3D animation video shows how the W700’s Twinhull and Saddle parts are assembled:

The saddle part is watertight, and serves as flotation. It features seven integrated (molded-in) plastic brackets (see above video) which keep the boat rigid.

The above video doesn’t show the MDO (composite of wood and polymer resin) bracket installed behind the saddle, in a special compartment.
This additional bracket reinforces the boat’s structure in the area where the load created by the combined weight of a heavy passenger and a heavy outboard motor requires it.

Wavewalk® Boating Accessories

1. Wavewalk® Paddles »
  • Wavewalk® PSP R  (9′ long)    Price: $190
  • Wavewalk® PSP L  (9’8″ long)    Price: $230

We don’t ship Wavewalk® paddles separately from Wavewalk® kayaks and boats, since any item that’s over 8 ft long requires shipping by freight truck.

Common kayak paddles are shorter than our paddles, and they won’t suit adults paddling our kayaks and boats. Other long paddles might be too ‘soft’ (flexible: slow, and waste your energy ), and/or not sturdy enough.
Our composite paddles are extra rigid and durable, so that you can use them for launching and beaching in difficult spots, for stand up paddling, and even for poling in shallow water.

2. Extra Pair of Standard Detachable Inflatable Flotation Tubes »

Price: $230.
Tube Length: 6ft, Tube Diameter: 6″
If outfitted with a second pair of inflatable flotation modules (total of 4 tubes), the W700 F and W700 SU function as a full-fledged Rigid-Inflatable Boat (RIB), and as such it works best for high speed motorizing and rough waters, offshore work, and diving, and it can still be effectively rowed if outfitted with rowing oarlocks. However, due to the extra width added by the inflatable tubes, this model is no longer easy to paddle. Note that it is advisable to detach the front pair of inflatable flotation tubes in case you want to use this model for angling.

3. Extra Pair of XL (12′) Detachable Inflatable Flotation Tubes »

Price: $440.
Tube Length: 12 ft, Tube Diameter: 7 1/4″

4. W700 Joystick Steering System »

W700 Transportation and Carrying

Car topping a W700 is easy and quick, even for one person –

Carrying a W700 can be as easy as dragging it on the ground:

Wavewalk Boats – Users and Applications

  • Big guys. These users can enjoy increased stability, a roomier cockpit, and a slightly higher saddle. The Wavewalk 700 is better for big and heavy guys than the 500 series. Read review »
  • Tandem paddlers. Typically, a middle aged or elderly couple looking to paddle together in a stable, comfortable, dry, and easy to paddle craft that they could car-top without problems. The W700 is the Best of Breed compared to both canoes and tandem kayaks. With two average size paddlers on board, the new model can accommodate a third paddler, or large-size dog. Recommended model: 700 R (kayak)
  • Tandem anglers. Typically, two big guys who fish out of a small microskiff, motorized dinghy, jon boat, large-size canoe, and other, heavier craft that require a trailer for transportation. Recommended models: 700 R, S4 – depending on propulsion (paddle or motor), and type of water (e.g. flat water, bays, offshore).
  • Hunters. There is enough room on board a W700 for a large-size hunter, plenty of gear, a motor, and a large-size dog. Recommended models: 700 R – depending on propulsion (paddle or motor).
  • Tandem hunters. Typically, duck and other waterfowl hunters, and their gear. Recommended models: 700 R, S4.
  • Families. The W700 is suitable for a couple paddling together with two young children. Recommended models: 700 R, S4   – depending on main propulsion (paddle or motor).
  • Boaters. The 700 and S4 are perfect tenders for a big boat or a yacht – as a paddle craft or rowing craft (“dinghy”), and motorized.  Recommended models: 700 R, 700 RIB, S4 – depending on propulsion (paddle or motor). Watch movie »
  • Kayak anglers. The only drawback the 700 has compared to the 500 series is its 20 lbs of additional weight. As far as everything else, it is a perfect car-top boat, while being lighter and much more stable than any high-end fishing kayak out there. Recommended models: 700 R (kayak), S4 – depending on propulsion (paddle or motor) and type of water (e.g. flat water, bays, offshore). Watch movies »
  • Flats fishermen. Typically, these anglers fish out of a Jon boat, a microskiff or skiff, which is a name given to a broad range of small, shallow-draft, stable motorboats that are too heavy to car-top, and can’t be paddled. As a microskiff, the 700 is easy to car top even for one person, and unrivaled as a mobile and stable paddle craft. Recommended model: 700 R, S4, depending on the number of anglers on board. More microskiff info »
  • Offshore fishermen. S4
  • Offshore technical crews. People working on offshore scientific, engineering and maintenance projects that typically involve the use of Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats (RHIB) or RIB (Rigid-Inflatable Boat).  Recommended model: W700 RIB, S4.
  • Catamaran-dinghy sailors. For a 1-2 crew. Recommended model: W700 RIB and S4.
  • Speed, fun and adventure seekers. For a 1-2 crew. Recommended model: W700 RIB, S4.

W500 or W700?

This is a question that each client would have to answer by themselves.
Most people who fish out of a W500 will tell you it’s the world’s best one-person fishing kayak, and we designed the W700 to be the world’s best two-person fishing kayak and the world’s best car-top fishing boat, and indeed it is both, according to its users »

In quantitative terms, we think that the main factors worth consideration (except dollars) are  Weight vs. Load Capacity. The models from the 700 series start at 80 lbs, which is 20 lbs (9 kg) more than the similar models from the 500 series.  And while the 700 series offers unrivaled performance across the board compared to other tandem fishing kayaks (including its being lighter than them), 20 lbs can be noticeable weight difference if you don’t really need a bigger Wavewalk® kayak. But if you’re a big guy who wants to fish with a fishing buddy on board, or paddle in tandem with one (or more) paddling partners, you’d better get a W700.

Having said that, at 80 lbs, and with its flat twin hulls, the 700 is still a car top boat, even for one person, and transporting it is easy.

As far as motorizing is concerned, being bigger and stabler, the 700 series models is suitable for more powerful outboards than comparable models from the 500 series. 700 models can go faster, carry more load including passengers, and handle more difficult waters. If these factors are important to you, you should get a 700, and if they aren’t, get a 500.  Read more and Watch movie »

In general, we’ve decided to offer all W500 models in the Kayak Section , together with the W700 R, while we offer all other W700 models under in this Boats Section. The difference being that while W500 and W700 R models work very well with motors, their main mode of propulsion is paddling.

Wavewalk® 700 Microskiff vs Other Skiffs

The W700 is an ultralight microskiff that you can car top easily and quickly, even if you have to do it by yourself, without help. It offers full tandem fishing capabilities when motorized, paddled or poled, as well as offshore capabilities. There is no other microskiff, dinghy, tandem fishing kayak or other small craft on the market that offers a similar combination of advantages, except the new Series 4 from Wavewalk »
Comfort wise, the 700 offers you to spend an entire day on the water without getting back to shore – as you’d expect from a full size fishing boat, and as a bonus, you stay dry.
The front and rear ends of the W700 cockpit’s spray deflector are designed in a way that allows for a transom motor mount to fit tightly, with no gap. This feature makes it even easier and more convenient to access an outboard motor’s controls, as well as to steer.

W700 or S4?

  • W700 advantages over the S4:  Solo kayaking, solo canoeing, tandem kayaking, tandem canoeing, portability.
  • S4 advantages over the W700: Motorizing, tandem motorizing, tandem fishing, stability, offshore trips, load capacity (big guys, heavy gear).
  • Shallow water – The S4 drafts less than the W700, and it features a skiff stand up casting platform, but the W700 paddles better, in general.
  • Offshore – Being more of a boat than the W700, the S4 is more seaworthy, and performs better when driving in the chop.
