I really thought my career was over before I got a W kayak, by Robbie Cairl

The W is as comfortable as any seat in my house. My back feels so good while I am kayaking now, I really thought my career was over before I got a W. I absolutely love it. I mean that so sincerely, but to say I have been out a dozen times usually for over 3 hours and a couple of times for 7 hours says it better. Yesterday was a drift on the Deerfield River with a couple of friends and just to be a wiseacre I stood up through several sets of class 1 rapids with no instability. In fact being higher up I could scout the rapids better. Not that I recommend such foolishness.
I have been meaning to check in but I wanted a snap shot worthy of my appreciation, it’s just that we are all more interested in fishing and paddling than photographing. I must recruit a friend to take a couple of shots next time I go out.
Getting the yak on and off the car gets easier every time and lashing the hulls to the roof rack instead of going all the way over the yak is easy and stable. I went up to Vermont on 91 twice, cruising at 65 with no movement or annoying strap hum.
I love changing positions, standing while paddling and especially fishing from a standing position, again increasing visibility. I understand why you asked that I use it for half an hour before showing it off to friends. A very steep learning curve, I was so comfortable in half an hour and now after what I estimate to be over 50 hours I am a hopeless show off.
I love the looks I get while driving or on the water. Everyone has to ask about it. The park ranger at Wilgus State Park in VT is an avid kayak fisherman and proudly showed me his very expensive kayak/canoe hybrid. He looked mine over and was very curious. As luck would have it we met on the water later that day and he got to see the W in action. The next day he excitedly told me he looked on line and how impressed he was and how ergonomically well designed and on and on. I was very kind and feigned interest. But on the inside I was like, I know friend I know. I bought one!
Oh, problems? I had to transport 90% of the camping equipment when a friend and I went camping on Grout Pond in Vermont last weekend. We only were a half mile from the launch but made it in one trip. With 2 conventional yaks it would have been several trips at best. That would have been a great photo, sorry, all the coolers and tents piled up and you couldn’t even see all the supplies in the hull. But seriously, I am only more excited and pleased than my wildest dreams every time I go out.
Thank you Yoav, I sure hope I am responsible for many orders to come.

4 lbs large mouth bass with lots of salad

By Robbie Cairl

Here is an interesting photo from this summer. My friend was panicking because I said I am releasing the fish if he takes a picture or not. He somehow had it in panoramic mode which caused the odd double exposure. A nice 4 lb large mouth with a huge side of salad as you can see!

I got a small, 30 lb thrust electric trolling motor and crudely attached it to my W500. I only used it twice and now wish I had gotten a slightly more powerful motor. It really didn’t do the job against a steady Connecticut River current, I will guess 2 knots. However it handles great and pushes me about twice as fast as my friends paddling their yaks.

Now the new S4 video is amazing! Some day I will bite the bullet and get a gas powered motor. My friend has a 2 horse on his jon boat, and not only does it fly it is so quiet you needn’t raise your voice to converse while running full speed. I still want the exercise I get from paddling though so the motor is just for getting me longer distances.

My oldest granddaughter will be 3 this summer and I am dying to get her on the water!

Wavewalk® 500 Reviews

Wavewalk launched the 500 series in May of 2009.
Currently, there are over two hundred Wavewalk® 500 reviews listed on this page.
Per our company policy, each Wavewalk® 500 review features the full name and state of the person who contributed it, as well as pictures.
We consider anonymous reviews and ones posted under an alias as being not trustworthy.
A review can be useful under the conditions that its author paid for the kayak they review, that they actually use it, and that they fully disclose their identity as a regular client or a reseller.
We disapprove of reviews authored by anyone who’s paid to write kayak reviews, whether directly or indirectly (e.g. through advertising on their website).

A Wavewalk® 500 owner may have contributed more than one review – For example, an Initial Review written shortly after they have received their kayak, and a Comprehensive Review after having outfitted it for fishing and used it over months or years.
An owner of a Wavewalk® 500 may also review it as a Hunting Kayak, and write a separate review of their boat as a Kayak for Children, or a Fishing Kayak. In some cases, we will publish both reviews, and if we don’t, the reader can find more stories and reviews from that by searching their name, or by contacting us.

Typically, our dealers are Wavewalk fans, they use the kayaks they buy from us personally for paddling, fishing, hunting and motorizing, and they don’t resell other kayaks. All of the above qualifies them as reviewers.

141 outings in 3 years. Best purchase of my life (almost)

Robbie Cairl

W. Massachusetts

I’m sorry I have not made any videos with my awesome Wavewalk 500. My buddy did take this snapshot of me yesterday. I’m about to land (and release) a nice 2 1/2 lb. smallmouth bass on the Connecticut River in Sunderland MA.
I love my W and keep track of my outings. Yesterday was my 141st adventure in 3 years. My back and all round fishing and kayaking experiences have been heavenly since I made the best purchase of my life. Well, second best, after my wedding license.

catching a 2.5 lb smallmouth bass on a fly

Me: Wavewalk 500 owner since spring 2013. I’m 60-ish soon to retire and use my W even more. I love to explore new bodies of water and fish (catch and release except for the rare stocked trout I may have to share with camping buddies). The Connecticut and Deerfield Rivers are my favorite haunts, I can put in the Conn just about a mile from home. My usual trip is a 3 mile paddle up stream for cardio and core workout, then crack a beer and float home while fishing, photographing, bird watching and observing whatever nature has to offer. The upright paddling position has allowed me to kayak more often for longer periods of time. The ample room, ability to stand, ease of handling while transporting were all added benefits I continue to enjoy.
