First Time Out In My W502 Fishing Kayak, By Russ Hicks, Connecticut

Took the yak out today for my 1st time, used paddle, went well.
Plan to use motor this week weather permitting. I have to rig boat 1st.
Local MV open part time will do mid week.
I changed the eye bolts to SS got 1″ longer, used a nut on top for more support against washer. I used SS washers, used your round composite backer-plate with a washer under it with a nylon lock SS nut so it can’t loosen up.
I made up a safety cable to secure the engine in case of motor mount issues, as per Honda’s recommendation. Put the rails & carpet on trailer.
That’s it for now. Russ

The trailer looks great too :)

Congrats Russ on a very wise purchase. :)

Take it slow, but the learning curve is well, like nothing. :)

Great job on the trailer, that will make launching and take out a breeze.

Good idea with the cable to lock down your motor, I put eye bolts in just for that,
but have yet to make the cable.

Tight lines and MoPaddle safe all.

I like your trailer, and I’m sure your 502 will feel very comfy on it :)

The chain attracts my attention .
It seems very useful preparation for emergency.
    Good job!

Finally a calm wind day that was also a free day for me. Hooked up the Honda on the WW. Went. for my 1st outboard ride. From idle to wide open it was flawless.. Put it away till spring. Will convert it to a fishing machine this winter. I will take lots of pictures. Russ

  6. John F. says:

Everything looks good Russ. It’s always a long winter for us W owners waiting for spring so we can get back on the water. At least we can tinker with our W’s during the winter…..who knows what this group will come up with next.

  7. Longfellow says:

What I see here is a craft labeled kayak that’s pretty much on par with small skiffs in terms of fishability and comfort, and offers some distinct advantages that I can find neither in skiffs nor in other fishing kayaks. It’s intriguing, and definitely something to think about.

  8. keastman says:

Get a plate on that trailer and take a winter break in Florida. You can motor that W til your heart’s content. The sunshine is free, we’ll get your money in other ways :D

  9. Big Steve says:

I am a larger than avg. guy wanting to find a smaller, yet stable fishing platform.
