Jay Kayak Fishing With His Son, In Tandem

Everyone is interested in the Kayak – Constantly fielding questions. Been taking my six year old out fishing – Plenty of room for a little guy plus poles, clothes food, buckets shovels and nets. Nice platform for photography as well.

Dennis Catching 100 lbs Eagle Ray – New Zealand W Kayak Night Fishing Report

I have mentioned before that our local harbour has a lot of sting rays. There are 2 varieties, Short tail and Eagle rays. Eagle rays are more numerous and can be spectacular to catch. They will leap from the water – they put up a massive fight. Short tails just tend to stick to the bottom and can be almost impossible to move.

I was fishing at night – about 8pm – and all of a sudden my reel started to scream, and there was no prize for guessing that I had hook an Eagle ray. It took about 300 metres [330 yards] of line – I wound in most of that in and off it went again – and this was repeated over and over.

Kayak fishers will cut the line quickly with these beasts because they pull so hard you either loose a reel full of line – or if you can apply enough drag to stop these things you can capsize a kayak easily. I wanted to get this fish to the W500 –initially because I didn’t want to lose all my line. and later because I just wanted to see how big it was.
It took me about 1-1/2 hours to get it to the kayak. I had my cell phone with me and tried to get some photos, but because it was so dark, and I was holding the line with one hand to hold the rays head at the surface of the water, it was very difficult. I only really got head shots of the thing. Continue reading

Dennis’ Account Of His First Time Paddling His W Kayak Standing Up

The very first time I went fishing in the W500, I missed the tide, and had the small anchor dragging because I had a very strong tidal flow and a strong wind both in the same direction.
As I headed back to shore I noticed a young guy on long SUP board. I hadn’t tried standing before that, but since the afternoon’s fishing was a right off I thought that I would give the stand up paddling a go.
After paddling my W500 sitting down up wind and standing up down wind a few times, I noticed that the young guy was paddling to shore and walking along the shore before re-launching each time, because he couldn’t paddle his board against both tide and wind.
I didn’t really take much notice of who was faster because I was busy experimenting. I found that if I leaned my weight on one side of the kayak, I could paddle on the other side and didn’t need to change over. It was fun, and if I can do it second time out then most people should be able to. Continue reading

Report On A Successful Fishing Trip – Ozello, Florida, By Gary Rankel

Dick Sherman and I had a nice day out of Ozello, Florida.
Dick landed a 25 inch redfish which he may be consuming as I type this, and we each had several more big reds on. Dick also caught a Sheepshead (also called a convict fish by the locals for obvious reasons) on a surface lure which is a super rare occurrence – I’ve yet to catch one in 6 years of fishing. I landed a jack crevalle, and a super-hungry 5-inch lizard fish that tried to swallow a 4-inch lure. Unfortunately, my big reds shook off before I got pictures of them, but it was a blast watching them swim underneath the W kayak.
