I took my wife’s cousin, Paulene, who is visiting from England, to the Crystal River yesterday to see some manatees. It was not only her first time in a W, it was her first time in a kayak, and she did well during a 2 mile paddle (maybe a blister or two on her hands).
The trip also gave me a chance to paddle in tandem with my wife for the first time, and I was surprised at how fast we were able to go despite the extra weight and me being the only paddler (I think I’m going to have to order another paddle from you, for times like these).
The two W’s also fit nicely into my new truck.
We only saw one manatee. Guess the warmer water has moved them out into the Gulf (hopefully not anywhere near the oncoming oil spill which is really scary).

manatees are smart
they’ll avoid the oil spill
Nice job getting out and looking for and finding the manatees.
Paddle Safe all.

Manatees are interesting creatures but more than once they have nearly dumped me over. Two years ago one stole my net and it was not found for four months. I suspect the oil spill won’t bother them too much, they should be able to avoid it.
I never thought manatees were very smart but hopefully they’ll avoid the oil. Just heard that the spill is about ready to wash up on a wildlife refuge area in LA, and will probably get to Mobile in a day or two. Doesn’t look good for fish, birds, marshes. Looks like the counter clockwise Gulf current may keep the spill west of us and the Tampa area, but this leak could go on for months the oil could make its way down to the Everglades and then up the Atlantic Coast. I sure hope they can cap it quick. I bet you’ll hear no more about new drilling in the Gulf.
