Jeff, if i was to test drive one Emmrod, which one would you suggest? Keep in mind I think I would use this on smaller streams. The target fish would mostly be smallmouth bass. The smallmouth spots I fish have a lot of overhead brush and trees on the banks. My favorite way to catch them is with a J-11 jointed Floating Rapala. My back up technique is live bait with a splitshot. The smallies may reach five pounds, but sometimes a big pike or muskie may jump on the offering.
Hey John, If you check out my website http://www.jeffstacklebox.com you’ll see a rod listed as the Packrod Saltwater spinning model. That pole with a 7 coil rod is ideal for smallmouth and the same spinning version that goes to Lake of the Woods with me each June. The reason for the “saltwater” name is the double hooded reel seat and the handle open for rinsing. So far as a reel a 2500 size is great something like a 2500 Shimano Saros or in my case a Daiwa 1300 SS Tournament. For line I prefer superline on the spinning rigs and normally run 10lb Fireline then leader that with fluorocarbon in 15 or 20lb test. That FC leader has held for me with musky and big pike but doesn’t bother the smallies. If you use mono 8 or 10lb test is fine whatever brand is the freshest in your market. By the way you should try Redfish Magic spinners up there for smallies. We bring them each summer to Canada and they are killer on everything there. I’ve got a piece here on the site talking about them. They are also the lure that caught everything on our Oak Island Adventure short on my site filmed for Emmrod. They can be purchased through the saltwater sections online at Bass Pro or Cabelas.
