I took the W500 out to Rainbow res today.
Hit the water at 10:45am and was off by 3pm.
Water temps were 45.6 degrees, air temps were 49.
Slight wind at times, and misty light rains fell on me all day.
(thought the Weather Man said it was supposed to be nice today)
All bass came out of 11′ of water to 19′ of water.

I started with a crank bait that dives around 14′, making sure I had good contact with the bottom.
But after 20 cast, and not even a bump, I put that rod down.
I started throwing a grub on 8lb fluro, on a lite fast action rod, keeping contact with the bottom at all times.
I’d cast out, let the grub drop to the bottom, give it a 10 count and pop it, and let it drop again.
Repeating until i felt a strike, which at this time of year is very light strike, and set the hook, but not to hard, just enough to raise my tip high and then the fight would be on.
I repeated this all day long with great results, the Small Mouth Bass gave me some great fights on the light line.
And as always, I dressed for the weather, PFD worn at all times, layered clothes and my rain gear kept me dry and warm.
I hope to do this until the ice comes, as I do every year
Happy and Safe Paddling all

Rox, it’s always a pleasure to read your fishing stories! Congrats on the catch
Happy Thanksgiving to you all,
Marco
Rox,
When I read about your cold weather kayak fishing exploits, I feel like a big fraidy cat. I did go out pond fishing though, with my 5 year old grandson visiting with his parents from Chile. He kept me so busy baiting his hook, the final talley was grandson: 5 sunfish (1 good size), me: 1 sunfish (naturally the smallest one). I did take pictures which I will try to post.
Happy thanksgiving to one and all!

Hi Rox,
What brand is your lite fast action rod?
I would like to ask you more questions about fishing but this is off topic here on the blog.
May I ask you some questions through email? Can you give me your email?
Mine is rotary44@hotmail.com

Nice job on a cold day Rox. Reminds me of our Canadian trips each June. Right now in N Florida we are looking at 50 or so in the mornings warming to the high sixties. No bad, but for those of us with thin blood you feel it. Thank goodness for Seal Skin socks and Frog Toggs.
Petru,
The lite rods I use are St Croix, I have one that was custom
made for me, SCvgraphite preimer model, and 2 St Croix med-lite fast action Triumph model rods, Daiwa Prodigy 1500 reels Spooled with 8lb vanish floro.
I use the Triumphs the most, the custom one will be used more for hair jigs and blade baits when the water temps dip below 40 degrees.
I like the med-lite rods with the fast action tip, they still have the back bone for good hook sets, and the fast action tips help in the Battles with larger fish.
I don’t horse them in, I let the rod do the work and tire them out.
They are a joy to fish with.
JohnZ, its always healthy to have some fear of cold waters, but I never
go out without my PFD on at all times, whistle and signaling device.
And a Float Plan, 2 people always know my plans for a fishing trip.
This way if I’m not home when I say I should be, I’ll get a call on my cell phone.
Safety first, and I always stay alert to my surroundings.
I used to never fished this late in the season in my SIT yaks!!!
Fell in once, and that was enough for me!!!
But after Owning the W300 and my W500′s, I have no fear of falling in at all.
Jeff, though I do layer my clothing, It takes a lot for me to get chilled.
Key is to stay dry and not over dress.
Safe paddling all!
Rox
