And here is the next segment of Jeff McGovern’s video report from the kayak fishing trip he made together with his fellow kayak fisherman Jeff Moran in Mosquito Lagoon, Florida:
PS–
60-70 lb of kayak fishing gear on board Jeff’s kayak, plus Jeff is a big guy who weighs 245 lbs, that’s a total payload of about 300 lbs, which explains to draft issue in 6″ shallow water.

You have to be careful when you go in skinny water. There can always be something down there that will damage the bottom of your hulls, so it’s better to WOW (walk or wait)…

The biggest danger here is stingrays that might hide just under the surface of the mud. Some of the ones we saw that day were in excess of three feet across. Stepping on one of those is a nasty experience. The tail barb would go through your calf or ankle like a hot ten penny nail. Walking through the lagoon mud is not all that hard if you take you time. You’ll sink in maybe to your knees at the worst before hitting the hard sand. Kind of like walking in snow. To avoid the rays you slide your feet rather than lift high for each step. That way they will move away from you since they are are only a real danger when stepped on. The depth here will remain the same until the summer months at that point picking up to another foot of water. Since there is no tidal flow in this area there are no oyster beds to be concerned with.
