The Next Level in Paddling - Beyond Kayaking

What would a kayaking magazine have to say about this picture?

Standup paddling in the surf

This picture represents a new paddle sport that’s beyond the experience and possibly even the expectation of the kayaking community, including the editors of kayaking magazines. Can any of the editors of those magazines seriously test a W Kayak if all they know is traditional kayaking?

In order to be able to form and express a valid opinion about the W Kayak these people would have to invest time in learning, and that’s something that some experts don’t necessarily like to do because they’d rather believe they already know everything worth knowing in their domain of expertise…

I think a (good) picture is worth a thousand words, even if those words are printed in a kayaking magazine.

Okay, so they dropped the ball, but I must say that it is strange - Why do you think this is happening?

I see what you mean and I agree with Pete. I would have expected the paddling media to be interested in reporting about new things.

    I don’t know, and frankly, I don’t really care :-D
I think something similar happened when snowboarding was introduced and the skiing establishment wouldn’t hear about it.
Fortunately, we live in other times, and the Internet stole the thunder from the traditional paddling media. I don’t think that some of the editors in those paddling magazines perceive themselves as being journalists, or even think they’re in the news business.

It looks like they’re trying to survive without adapting to the changing environment.

I agree with what Pete said about the kayaking magazines dropping the ball in this case, but still you’d be getting more by cooperating with them than by criticizing them. There are still many people who read those magazines who haven’t heard about your boat.

Let’s not be naive about this — money talks and advertising is the bread and butter of outdoor magazines. They won’t give you or anyone else free publicity if they think you can afford paying for ads.
