John Fabina
Wavewalk Kayak Fisherman, Wisconsin

John rigged his new W fishing kayak while the ice on Wisconsin's lakes and rivers was melting. Once the ice was gone, he followed the instructions for first timers, and took his boat on its maiden voyage:

John's first bass caught in his W fishing kayak
-"Today I landed my first fish on the W. It was a small bass but nevertheless, it broke the ice. I was after trout today but all I caught was five bass. Had a good time and I was able to practice in the wind and waves. The W performed well."

John's camouflaged fishing kayak
-"I did do a little painting today, I like the way it turned out. When I head up north this summer to the rivers and backwaters maybe this will help me sneak up on the big ones"

TWO YEARS LATER:
JOHN STATRS A NEW BUSINESS NAMED BREW CITY KAYAKS, AND BECOMES WAVEWALK KAYAKS DEALER IN WISCONSIN

John's Story:

-"It hit 60 today and the ice is off most of the local lakes. Wind was at a mininum so I had to go on the maiden voyage.
Safety first, I removed all fishing gear, donned a life vest, and remained in shallow water."

-"I have been rigging my new "w" for fishing.
Using ideas from other owners I have added a crate in the back that includes three rod holders and a net holder.
Two quick draw rod holers have been mounted in front."

-"It kind of felt like laerning to ride a bike again.
Then I tried standing, I think I'll work more on that when tha water warms up.
Just one half hour in the "W" and I think I am going to enjoy the freedom of changing positions while fishing."

-"The first thing I enjoyed was getting in without gatting my feet wet."

-"While sitting down and beginning to paddle I realized this craft was different then my other kayaks. After a short cruise I started using tips from the "w" blogs.
Turning felt very natural, easy to do by leaning slightly, again different then my previous experience with my kayaks.
Felt very comfortable and natural in riding position.
Tried sitting, again a little bit shaky at first but more confident as time went on."

-"Also added on the side a hook
that is used with the bungee to quickly hold rod on side of the "w".

-"Finally, I riveted two pieces of aluminum that were fashioned into a paddle holder."

John's first voyage with his W kayak rigged for fishing:

-"
-”I ventured out today to try to find crappies or blue gills. I tried two lakes, water temps were in the low 40’s. I found fish but I couldn’t coax them to bite. It may be a little early yet. More importantly it was my first time out on the W with fishing gear. Out for six hours on two lakes and no back fatigue!"

-"My fish finder mount is a portable unit that came with a plastic base and battery holder. It also came with a nylon soft case which I removed and will use for ice fishing.
Sometimes the best set up is the easiest. I simply used the W’s bungee to secure plastic base and added a safety cable. It is very secure. I mounted the transducer sideways on the bracket and attached it with the suction cup on the side of the W. It worked great. Now we just need the water to warm up."
